Site Success

This is the most common form of information, usually set up to monitor site usage and growth. Key data is the number of posts by time period, posts by forum, and for organisations with multiple sites, posts by site. Below is an example of data collated manually for one of Chat Moderators’ clients to show how their individual boards performed against each other and the overall growth trend.

Stats-1

It can be seen that something has clearly happened to Board 6 around the weekend of April 16th (compare the change in post volumes 18th April when compared with 15th April) that may require further investigation. Such statistics can also all be graphed up to see how they are performing in terms of growth, compared to the norm.

A rudimentary collection system can usually be performed manually by simply tracking the change in the total number of posts on the forum homepage, assuming any archiving processes are fully understood.

If data collection is available via the software, then it should also be available at forum level, to allow the Community Producer to see how topics perform over time, and to change them as soon as they start to become redundant. This should still be considered if it had to be a manual process, but cost would then be a bigger consideration. Below is an example set up to gain an indication of approximate forum usage on a newly launched community for women about to get married.

Forum totals were recorded, and were converted to new posts.

Stats

This spreadsheet clearly indicates a potential problem; that after just a few days of analysis it is fairly obvious that the forums need to be re-designed to stop all the posts being on one topic.
